Trocoxil 30mg Pain Relief for Dogs

For the treatment of pain and inflammation associated with degenerative joint disease in dogs aged 12 months or more in cases where continuous treatment exceeding one month is indicated.

Trocoxil 30mg Pain Relief

Trocoxil is a new pain relief medication for dogs suffering the effects of the long term chronic or persistent pain and inflammation associated with degenerative joint disease.

A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, Trocoxil does not need to be given daily to control pain but is administered as a single chewable tablet once a month.

A monthly rather than a daily dose holds the promise of reducing or avoiding the nasty stomach upsets basic COX inhibitors can cause in dogs who need regular or permanent pain relief medications.
The active substance in Trocoxil, mavacoxib, works by blocking an enzyme called cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2), which is involved in producing substances called prostaglandins, which produce pain and inflammation. By blocking the production of prostaglandins Trocoxil reduces the pain and inflammation caused by damage to the joints.

Key Features:
  • Palatable - designed to be a chewable treat.
  • Long acting - Dose on day 1, day 14 and monthly thereafter (Max of 6.5 months)
  • Very useful for chronic Degenerative Joint Disease in dogs
Doseage and Administration:
The drug can be mixed into the dog's food or can be given before a meal.
After the initial dose of Trocoxil the second dose is given 14 days later.
The dose is then given once a month for 5 more doses.
It is then important to miss a month's treatment before starting a new round of treatment. This is to ensure the level of drug does not accumulate to above therapeutic levels. In most dogs Trocoxil will continue to provide pain relief during this 'month off' period and extra pain relief is not needed. A few dogs however may need to have daily dosing with an alternative non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug during this 'month off' period in order to stay pain free.

As with all non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug therapy it is recommended that routine blood monitoring is performed every 6 months. This is because drug body clearance rates change if there is any liver or kidney disease and for this reason drug dose rates may need to be altered or even stopped.

Active Constituents:
Mavacoxib 30mg per tablet

Safety:
Trocoxil has an excellent safety profile similar to other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs but as a precaution it should not be used in breeding, pregnant or lactating bitches or in dogs less than one year of age or if heart, liver, kidney or gastrointestinal disease is present.
Any signs of vomiting, diarrhoea, apathy, loss of appetite should be brought to the attention of your vet. Dogs may try and get to these tasty tablets so ensure they are safely put away after use.
